2024-09-10 16:13:44 NZSTWe have been using the Bite Times book for at least 15 years. It is always accurate (though sometimes in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland, there is over fishing, leading to lots of undersized or no fish). We are able to target our fishing times to the bite times so we have success. More recently our family members have been using it for hunting, where it has also been successful. Thanks once again.

Yes, it is frozen. Sorry about that. The building it's bolted to is getting a full-on renovation and the cabling keeps suffering mishaps. Worse still, I'm 2 hours drive away so I can't dash over there and fix it up. Keep an eye on it, it will be back up soon, I hope

2023-08-16 14:06:27 NZSTWe fish mostly at the mussel farms or in Hauraki Gulf. We have been buying both tide times or bite times every year ever since they were available. When they were first sold at service stations and some shops. Which is many years ago. The bite times are very accurate. We have also converted relatives onto using them. Thanks once again.

2021-09-01 10:31:57 NZSTHow accurate Is the nz tide book they are different to the met service tide information.the height of the tide and time are different.thankyou Peter.
Hi Peter, without knowing exact details we can't comment on the differences you see but please bear in mind that predictions are not precise and that a time difference of less than about 5 minutes is insignificant in terms of the sea level - just a few cm at most.

2011-01-03 14:18:26 NZSTHi people, good book use it often. I wonder if I can ask a question? I live in the Queen Charlotte Sound and I have noticed many times that every now and again the Picton/ Tory Channel tide drops back a much bigger time difference than the usual amount? Take for instance this month 16th Jan, the tide is in at 6-53pm and the next tide at 8-36am in the morning a drop of 1hr 43mins? Then again on sunday 30th a drop of 1hr 12mins. I have lived and boated in Auckland and in Brisbane Australia, but have never run into this strange tide change before? Do you know why this happens?

2008-03-09 08:46:00 NZSTHey took me quite a few stabs on that tiny little map to bring up an area close enough for the scroll to include Onehunga. What about a bigger map for us older visually impaired fisho's. Sure there is probably instructions on how to enlarge the map but life's too precious at my age to read the small print on everything I do.
Ok, specially for you, there is now a bigger map. It's based on the Google maps and gives you a much more accurate way to pick places, plus you can zoom in and see exactly where you are. Some of the markers are a wee bit off-beam but we'll get them fixed up over time.
Check it out here.

2008-01-29 10:08:04 NZSTHi Guys,
I have been an enthusiastic user for quite some time now .. using Firefox. I started using Opera recently and the tide wave doesn't show on the graph. So as a test I tried Safari, and that also doesn't show the tide wave, plus the images are overlapping. Is it me? Is it something I said?!
I'm overlooking the Manukau at Cornwallis .. kinda half way between Onehunga and the Heads .. I guess I'll have to go to all the trouble of turning my head anad looking out the window to see what the tide is doing! But planning ahead requires me bringing out the old chrystal ball again .. or I could always crank up Firefox I suppose.
Cheers,
Peter

2007-08-31 16:08:11 NZSTGreat site really good to have the tides represented graphically.
I have noticed for Nelson tides ofu tide heights (from your tide flash page) are different to LINZ site tide heigts.
E.g.Fri 31 Aug
LINZ 0.2 4.3 0.2 4.5
Ofu 0.1 4.29 0.1 4.39
A 100mm discrepancy at the top and bottom of some tides.
Visualy inspecting the heigts on the graphs with the scale apears to agree with the LINZ data but when you click on the gaph the displayed height is about 100 mm lower than you would expect.
Thanks for taking the time to document this. I have checked back to the official figures and I'm pleased to say that ours are closer to the official heights than the ones on the LINZ site. There are two things to note here. The difference is actually much smaller than 100mm - taking the first height as an example, the official height is 0.14 which gets rounded to 0.1. The LINZ site height may well be 0.15 (I don't know though) which would round up to 0.2 and put the actual discrepancy at 0.01 which is less than the error we can expect to occur.
LINZ do use a different method to calculate tides on their website so small differences may be seen. While 100mm may seem a lot, it is near the limit of accuracy we can expect from tide predictions, since tides are affected by winds and atmospheric pressure on top of any systemic errors in the prediction process. Attempting to calculate to accuracies much better than 100mm could be considered futile.

2007-07-16 06:06:15 NZSTGreat site very useful to me living on Kawau Island. I have noticed just recently however that the Height predictions have been way out for Kawau...any ideas?...Cheers
Well spotted. For a small number of places, the second and fourth high tide of each day could incorrect by a few minutes, or up to 30 minutes in extreme cases. In the case of Kawau Island, the tide was reported 21 minutes late. This problem has now been corrected.

2007-06-17 17:27:14 NZSTPeople will have noticed that Google Ads are popping up everywhere. Sorry about that but you'll appreciate that it costs a certain amount to run a free website and getting some of that back is necessary for us.
We will continue to improve the site as well as our tide graphs which are extremely popular, and we will also keep the ads as unobtrusive as possible. Anything that flashes or jiggles won't be seen anywhere near this website.
We also highly recommend the Mozilla FireFox web browser. We use it to develop and test our web pages and suggest you use it too. We specially recommend it for Mac users. Safari just doesn't cut the mustard, and we've pretty much given up trying to make the tide graphs work nicely in Safari. Follow the FireFox link at the bottom of any of our pages.
Thanks for your continued use of the site, and with Google AdWords, more is better.

2007-03-23 07:27:02 NZSTIs there ant reason why the website is so small on my monitor, i.e. half size
It depends on your monitor size and rsolution. The site is designed to work correctly on an 800x600 monitor. There are still many of these in common use, though the majority are now 1024x768 or larger.
While it's possible to make web pages dynamically expand to fill the monitor, this can be a lot of work and for the web graph we have decided - at least in the short term - not to do that.
Does anyone else think it should be bigger?

2007-01-26 06:04:50 NZSTI think your efforts have been very worthwhile! Really pleased you ditched Java which speeds up page loading and really chuffed that more ports are available such as Waimakiriri Mouth. On the downside, you don't seem to be able to click on the curve at any point to check time of day for specific state of tide. i.e half between high & low. Sure you can work it out but liked the fact you could just click on the curve previously. Thanks.

2006-12-24 21:21:17 NZSTHi people!
Christmas Day falls on December 25. It is preceded by Christmas Eve on December 24, and in some countries is followed by Boxing Day on December 26. Some Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate Christmas on January 7, which corresponds to December 25 on the Julian calendar. December 25 as a birthdate for Jesus is merely traditional, and is not thought to be his actual date of birth.Good luck!
I'll drink to that!

2006-09-26 14:00:33 NZSTExcellent site. Wander if you can put more areas in, as there are quite big differences in time/ tide from one area to another eg; Auckland and Thames. Thames has much bigger tide movement, and other sites list good old Thame (no I'm not from there) but do lots of snokeling round that coast . Cheers
The problem is getting information about tide time differences for these places. Generally you can find somewhere nearby and the tides won't be much different. You would have to be say 20 or more kilometres from another place before the time difference exceeds a minute or two.

The Dargaville offsets are calculated for the Kaipara, whereas you are at Bayleys Beach on the seaward side, where the offsets are +20 and -1. That accounts for the discrepancy of a couple of hours or so.

2005-04-13 21:05:53 NZSTI am curious as to why tide offsets for Waitaki Mouth are referenced to Bluff when Dunedin is closer?
Tide figures for Dunedin are given for the inner harbour which is a long way in from the open sea, and the tides will be affected more by this, than by the open-sea distance to Bluff.

2005-02-10 12:51:11 NZSTGreat Site! Just a wee question, how close are the times for Karaka (or southern Manukau) to the Onehunga times? Many thanks.
There are quite a few places called Karaka, three in Manukau. We only have figures for Manukau Heads and Onehunga Wharf, and the wharf gets high tide 20 minutes later than the heads, so anywhere in Manukau Harbour will get it's tides sooner than Onehunga wharf but not more than 20 minutes earlier. You could use 10 minutes earlier than Onehunga tide times as a rule of thumb; since tides don't change much in 10 minutes.

You offer a great service. Could you just make it a little clearer by a different choice of colours on the tide chart? Its not immediately clear which is high and which is low tide. It would also help to support the visual information with labels e.g. beach and sea. Perhaps also a summary giving high and low tides in text to support the visual informatino

2004-01-09 10:33:26 NZSTGreat site - some requests.
1) Add times of high and low tide to graphs
2) Add height of high and low tide to graphs
3) Allow us to set default to any one of the locations eg Sumner
4) How about a week-ahead (even 3-month-ahead printable) tabular view suitable for printing (good way to get sponsorship perhaps??)
NB Big messy surf at the moment - I'll wait 2 - 3 hours till just after low tide and then get out and have some fun
We don't publish too much on the website because our core (and paying) business is producing tide charts, books and calendars. Look at the shop page. Read the FAQ for information about your other points.

Is the curve a sine curve?
regards
John Martin
In a few cases the curve may approximate a sine curve but for most places it is quite different. A tide curve is created by adding a set of sine curves together, and there may be up to 140 different curves (called constituents) for any one place.

Sun Dec 29 08:51:27 NZDT 2002Great site. As a keen recreational fisherman fishing around Cook Strait,I am always wanting to know whether it is springs or neaps. Perhgaps you could consider adding this information to your wonderous graphics. A graph for the Mana/Plimmerton area would also be appreciated as the tide height is considerably different to Taranaki. Thanks in anticipation.
